On October 4th, 2012, D-Wave Systems Inc., a Canadian quantum computing startup, has announced that it has closed $30 million in VC funding from Bezos Expeditions and In-Q-Tel (venture arm of the U.S. Intelligence Community). This venture deal demonstrates a high level of interest in quantum computing both from private and government sectors. In May 2011 D-Wave Systems Inc. sold a quantum computing system to Lockheed Martin. In May 2013, D-Wave Two, the computer company’s latest model, has been installed in the Quantum Artificial Intelligence Lab at NASA’s Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, California.

Yet beyond these highly publicized deals, the market for quantum computing does not exist in the traditional sense of the word “market”, assuming products and services for underlying technology, with the exception of quantum cryptography segment. The quantum computing processor, a physical device enabling the principle of quantum computing, is still rather a theoretical concept than a ready-to-implement engineering solution. At the same time this rapidly evolving market is one of the most active R&D fields, attracting substantial government funding that supports research groups at internationally leading academic institutions, national laboratories, and major industrial-research centers. The governments are the major driving force behind investments in quantum computing R&D, fiercely competing for what is perceived as the most promising technology of the 21st century. The world’s largest government IT/Defense contractors follow the government suit.

So, what is the rationale for quantum computing market?

a. National Security Considerations:

Quantum cryptography is the key to secure communications;

Quantum computing opens new realms in developing new weapons and breaking into adversary communications;

Quantum computing is a geopolitical game changer.

b. National Economy Considerations:

Quantum computing opens new horizons almost in every aspect of human life, whether it’s new medicine or renewable energy;

Quantum computing is an economy game changer, with a potential of disrupting entire industries and creating new ones.

The report covers the quantum computing R&D, products, technologies and services as well as government, corporate and venture capital investments in quantum computing.

The report provides detailed year-by-year (2015 – 2020) forecasts for the following quantum computing (QC) market segments:

R&D of the physical device enabling quantum computing;

Quantum cryptography;

Quantum computing simulation;

Quantum computing programming infrastructure

Quantum computing market by top eight countries.

Let us put it bluntly – the Federal IT organization has never been considered the frontline of innovation and business leadership, at least not before 2009. In its first year in office, the Obama Administration has characterized its IT legacy as fragmented, poorly executed, and lacking the productivity and performance gains deployed effectively in the private sector. Since 2009 the things have started to change. It’s still early to say whether these reforms have brought fruits, but their impact on both the Federal IT market and private sector is undeniable.

In the years to come the Federal IT market will be driven by two major forces – pressure to cut federal IT budgets without losing efficiency and the implementation of new technologies. The current Administration has started an overhaul of the entire Federal IT organization, betting on new technologies, “rent, not buy” principle and open source. The next Administration will have little choice but continuing these policies. Lack of qualified IT personnel could set back but not thwart these plans.

With a cumulative market valued at $518 billion (2013 – 2018), the U.S. Federal IT market will grow steadily – at about 3% CAGR over the period 2013 – 2018. The projected growth rate of 3% is less than historical average 6% in the first decade of 21st century, reflecting not only struggling economy and budget pressures but also confidence in better performing government IT machine at lower costs.

The focus is on deployment of technologies proved their worth in the private sector. The technology segments like business intelligence, cloud computing, eDiscovery, GIS and geospatial, non-relational database management systems, Smart Grid, SOA, unified communications and virtualization will see double digit growth in the period 2013 – 2018. Total annual U.S. Federal IT market will surpass $93 billion by 2018.

The report answers the following questions:

What policies will shape the U.S. Federal IT market in the period 2013-2018?

What segments of the U.S. Federal IT market are poised for fast growth?

What are key trends in the U.S. Federal IT market?

What are market opportunities in providing IT solutions for Government sector?

The report provides detailed year-by-year (2013 – 2018) forecasts for the following U.S. Government market segments:

Hardware, software, IT consumables and contracted IT services;

Agency-by-agency detailed forecasts for both defense and civilian sectors;

Fast growing/high priority technology segments;

By investment type – National Security System, Mission Area Support, Infrastructure & Office Automation Telecommunications, Grants to State and Local IT Investments, Enterprise architecture and planning.

Despite sequestration the U.S. government is still expanding its cybersecurity force, a fact not lost either on America’s adversaries or allies in undeclared but raging cyberwar. China’s cyber threat is nothing new, yet evidence of China-originated attacks piles on at a frightenining rate.

“The recent intrusions at the International Monetary Fund, the U.S. defense contractor Lockheed Martin, and at Citibank join those that occurred in the oil and gas sector, at NASDAQ, and at Google as further, troubling instances of a widespread and serious phenomenon. Even some companies employing sophisticated commercial defenses have fallen victim to intrusions that have compromised services and stolen intellectual property,” said Deputy Secretary of Defense William J. Lynn, speaking at the 28th Annual International Workshop on Global Security in Paris. To respond the cyber threat the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) have established a pilot program with leading private defense contractors and ISPs called DIB Cyber Pilot and that is only one of the many federal government programs driving the cyber security market.

Over the past few years a number of cyber attacks perpetrated by criminals, hackers and foreign nations against the U.S. Government’s networks rose sharply.

“Among the greatest concerns that impacts both military and civilian realms is cybersecurity,” James G. Stavridis, Navy Adm., NATO’s supreme allied commander for Europe and commander of U.S. European Command, told the Senate Armed Services Committee. “Today, we have a billion devices that are accessing the Internet,” he said. “Our economies are entangled in this Internet sea, and it’s an outlaw sea. Nothing exists in the norms of behavior. There is a military aspect to it, but it’s all of society. At some point, there needs to be a very global conversation on this challenge.”

Despite the bleak budgetary environment, the U.S. government sector witnesses a blossoming of investments in cyber security technologies.

“Federal agencies have spent more on cyber security than the entire GDP of North Korea, who some have speculated is to be involved with some of this cyber attacks,” said Senator Thomas. L. Carper. “The issue of Cyber Warfare is not science fiction anymore. It’s reality.”

The short- to long-term federal cyber security investments will be driven:

by ever-increasing number and severity of cyber attacks,

by dramatic expansion in computer interconnectivity and the exponential increase in the data flows and computing power of the government networks;

by perception of the U.S. adversaries that the United States is dependent on information technology and that this dependency constitutes an exploitable weakness;

by developments in the existing cyber security approaches and technologies and emergence of new technologies and approaches.

With a cumulative market valued at $65.5 billion (2013 – 2018), the U.S. Federal Cybersecurity market will grow steadily – at about 6.2% CAGR over the next six years.

This new quantitative report “U.S. Federal Cybersecurity Market Forecast 2013-2018″ provides:

The U.S. government has laid out broad plans for the implementation of cloud computing in the federal government infrastructure, a step reflecting a fundamental re-examination of investments in technology infrastructure. The U.S. Federal Government cloud computing market enters into double-digit growth phase – at about 16% CAGR over the period 2013-2018, with annual federal cloud computing market to hit $10 billion landmark by 2018.

Among report findings:

Transition to the cloud is not a free ride. Transition to the cloud opens rich market opportunities for the vendors in cloud management services (broken down into four segments);

The government sources estimate the portion of Federal IT to move to the cloud as $20 Billion, unrealistic projection by our accounts, completely undermining transition difficulties and costs in the period 2013-2018.

Mobile cloud service for the federal government users is a fledgling market in the beginning of steep growth.

The report provides detailed year-by-year (2013 – 2018) forecasts for the following U.S. Federal Government market segments:

Agency-by-agency detailed forecasts for both defense and civilian sectors;

Software as a Service (SaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)

Cloud transition and management services: by four segments;

By investment type – National Security Systems, Mission Area Support, Infrastructure & Office Automation Telecommunications, Enterprise Architecture and Planning, Grants to State and Local IT

Mobile cloud services

Information has become the central asset of government. The ever increasing cyber attacks on the U.S. government networks, growing dependence of organizational functions on advanced information technology (IT) and emergence of new technologies have brought pressure on the U.S. Federal IT management to drastically review the business continuity and disater recovery (BC/DR) paradigm, practices and tools. Other challenges include necessity to cope with the Big Data, budget pressures and government-wide shift of IT policies from Capital Expenditure to Operational Expenditure strategy. A sense of uncertainty about cyber security among U.S. Federal IT policymakers will contribute to growth in the business continuity/disaster recovery segment.

The Federal IT Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery policies in the report period will focus on:

Wide adoption of cloud and virtualization technologies with integrated BC/DR functions;

Putting in place the dynamic organizational model for continuous risk assesment and contingency planning;

Adoption of cost-effective backup and data protection technologies without compromising risk parameters;

Shortening recovery time;

Improving BC/DR interoperability of the government IT systems and the national critical IT infrastructure.

Market Research Media forecasts that the US Federal IT market for business continuity and disaster recovery solutions will surpass the landmark of $5 billion in 2016, growing in 2013-2018 at a CAGR of around 9%.

The report provides:

Updated: February 2013 – The U.S. government-related IP traffic will increase tenfold from 2013 to 2018. US-China cyber confrontation is nothing new but Chinese hacking attacks and the U.S. Administration’s new hardball policy shift with China (US arms sale to Taiwan and US-China currency spat) will likely add fuel to the fire of cyber war. Deep Packet Inspection is the only currently available technology capable to provide security of IP traffic at ever growing rates that has inherent traffic management capabilities. Recently massive growth in data processing power and new cyber threats have spurred the deployment of DPI technologies in the U.S. Government agencies.

In 2011, we’ve seen a palpable shift from reactive approach to cyber security to proactive (Einstein – US-CERT programs) and attitude change of federal CIO’s with regard to Deep Packet Inspection (DPI). While technological advantages of the DPI technology leave no doubt about its significant role in cyber security, lawful interception and data leakage protection, the perception of DPI as “postal employees opening envelopes and reading letters inside” and privacy concerns hurdle its deployment.

Given the severity of recent Chinese hacking attacks and the potential catastrophic consequences of critical networks disruption, DPI technology is in a favorable position to emerge as a major line of cyber defense for years to come. The U.S. Government Deep Packet Inspection market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 31% from 2013 to around US$ 1.8 Billion by 2018. The market will see a few good years of explosive growth in all segments before going flat.

The report answers the following questions:

Why pay any attention at all to the U.S. Government DPI market?

What segments of the U.S. Government DPI market are poised for fast growth?

What are key trends in DPI deployment?

Will legal hurdles and privacy concerns impede DPI deployment in government networks and DPI use for surveillance & monitoring purposes?

What are drivers and inhibitors of the U.S. Government DPI market?

What are market opportunities in providing DPI solutions for Government sector?

The report provides detailed year-by-year (2013 – 2018) forecasts for the following U.S. Government market segments:

Deep Packet Inspection software, hardware, services (including SaaS/PaaS/IaaS) and personnel training

Deep Packet Inspection applications for security, Sigint (Signals Intelligence) and network management;

Deep Packet Inspection market by Defense/Civilian agencies;

Deep Packet Inspection market by Landline/Mobile networks.

If one were to choose a metrics that represents the best national military capacity, the high performance computing power of a nation would win as the most comprehensive measure. More and more countries view supercomputing technology as a symbol of national military power.

High performance computing will be a key technology for meeting national security requirements and to enhance national defense and economic competitiveness. High performance computing contributes substantially to the design and development of advanced vehicles and weapons, planning and execution of operational military scenarios, the intelligence problems of cryptanalysis and image processing, the maintenance of nuclear stockpile, and is a key enabler for science and discovery in security-related fields.

“The United States cannot afford to take a back seat in computer technology to the Chinese, or to anyone else. The nation that leads the world in high-performance computing will have an enormous competitive advantage in every sector, including national defense…”, said Eric D. Isaacs, Director of Argonne National Laboratory.

The global defense high performance computing market is projected to reach $13.6 billion in 2020. The estimate for worldwide cumulative market 2015 – 2020 is $65.5 billion, for a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10.4% over the period 2015-2020.

No modern war has been won without technological superiority. No future war will be won without it. The High Performance Computing (HPC) provides many capabilities and tools the military needs to address defense problems. HPC hardware and software can be used to address a wide spectrum of defense-related issues, including: protecting bases of operations through the mitigation of toxic threats; modeling to support certification of new aircraft-store combinations before deployment to conflicts zones; supporting air and space supremacy; conducting climate, weather, and ocean modeling that provides valuable information for countermine warfare; data mining and intelligence analysis, disaster modeling, preparation for emergency operations and humanitarian relief operations throughout the world. These are but a few examples.

The report provides detailed year-by-year (2015 – 2020) forecasts for the following defense HPC market segments:

Infrastructure and service: 11 segments including servers, interconnects, HPC in the cloud and others;

Applications: 11 segments;

Fast growing/high priority technology segments, among them ARM-based servers, in-memory computing, and embedded High Performance Computing;

By geographic region (Americas, EMEA, Asia/Pacific Rim) and by top 10 countries (country-by-country).

The report accounts for critical HPC applications in weapons technology, military communications, military simulation, operational weather and ocean forecasting; planning exercises related to analysis of the dispersion of airborne contaminants; cryptanalysis; military platform analysis; survivability/stealth design; intelligence/surveillance/reconnaissance systems; virtual manufacturing/failure analysis of large aircraft, ships, and structures; and biotechnology.

How much do individual countries plan to spend on defense-related HPC between 2015 and 2020? Where are the major market growth opportunities in military HPC market in 2015-2020? How are emerging COTS solutions shaping the market? These critical questions and many more can be answered through our in-depth research, as presented in this report.

The fledgling NoSQL marketplace is going through a rapid transition – from the predominantly community-driven platform development to a more mature application-driven market. Scaling up web infrastructure on NoSQL basis have proven successful for Facebook, Digg and Twitter. Successful attempts have been made to develop NOSQL applications in the biotechnology, defense and image/signal processing. Interest in using key-value pair (KVP) technology has reemerged to the point where the traditional RDMS vendors evaluate strategy of developing in-house NoSQL solutions and integrating them in current product offers. It will not take long before we’ll see acquisitions driven by emerging NoSQL technology. The future deals will likely be made to better compete both in platform offering and in vertical market segments.

The NoSQL market has seen more activity lately – venture capital funding, mergers & acquisitions and new product offers:

September 2012 – In-Q-Tel, the venture investment arm of the U.S. Intelligence Community, invests in 10gen, developer of the MongoDB open source database;

August 2012 – Sqrrl, a National Security Agency’s spin-off startup, raised $2Mln to develop NoSQL database Accumulo

July 2012 – NuoDB raises $10Mln to develop cloud NoSQL database that behaves like traditional SQL

June 2012 – Cloudant launches NoSQL data layer service for Windows Azure;

May 2012 – 10gen secures $42 million in venture funding;

January 2012 – Amazon launches DynamoDB, a new NoSQL data service;

January 2012 – Oracle announces the availability of Oracle Big Data Appliance and partners with Cloudera to provide an Apache Hadoop distribution and tools for the Big Data Appliance;

November 2011 – Cloudera Inc., the provider of Apache Hadoop-based data management software and services, raises $40 million.

November 2011 – Basho, the company behind Riak, raises $5 Mln.

The worldwide NoSQL market is expected to reach $3.4 Billion by 2018 at a CAGR of 21% between 2013 and 2018. NoSQL market will generate $14 Billion in revenues over the period 2013 – 2018.

Highlights from the report include:

Key-value date store is the only currently available database technology capable to provide combination of scalability, performance and robustness for extremely large databases, those beyond capability of RDBMS to handle data effectively.

Transaction consistency is the biggest obstacle to adoption of NoSQL. Still NoSQL technology fills the gap for many applications where transaction consistency concern is secondary to scalability and performance gains.

Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMS) are here to stay. Non-relational database is not a replacement but rather a supplement to RDBMS. We forecast gradual convergence of both technologies into hybrid ecosystem and takeover of NoSQL technology leaders by established RDBMS vendors.

NoSQL and cloud computing: a match made in heaven

The report provides detailed year-by-year (2013 – 2018) forecasts for the following NoSQL market segments:

NoSQL market segments by geographic region: Americas, EMEA and Asia/Pacific;

NoSQL market segments by application: biotechnology, defense, ERP/CRM, financial, geosciences/weather, image/signal processing, mobile/telecom and web;

NoSQL market segments by platform, application and services: NoSQL platform software, NoSQl appliances, NoSQL application software, integration, middleware and services.
